Growing up, you are trained to believe that everyone follows the same life path.

Better yet, we are led to believe that there is a right path and that we are all expected to follow it: grow up, get an education, get a good job, get married, and have children. I think we were led to believe that happiness was the reward of following this rigid route.

We idolize, congratulate and promote a singular way to live as suitable or winning, and anything which deviates from this is considered wrong, odd or losing.

Why is getting married and having kids the best possible choice out of all of the options in how to live one’s life?

Why do we deem it acceptable to pity, judge, and look down on individuals who do not follow this strict continuum?

I think it has to do with the fact that misery likes company.
