The Addiction to Advancement

Social Image as a Consumer Cost

The weirdest thing dawned on me the other day. I was spending time with a friend; she had squeezed an hour for me while I happened to be in town. I was super grateful; this person is a great mentor and friend but is exceptionally busy.

However, as I get older, I wonder why some people are so busy.

For example, this friend of mine is very wealthy. By very wealthy, I mean I know she does not need to work to sustain her day-to-day life. However, she works and sees work in a very survival-focused mindset. She is very worried about future stability for someone who has so much financial security in an obsessive (addictive) manner.

Before judging this person, I try to adjust my perspective and ask the simple, but difficult question:

What am I not seeing?

This friend of mine is on a clear purpose, a purpose to prove a point. She is seriously committed to her work in a manner that is demonstrated by what she is willing to sacrifice, sustain and settle for in order to professionally continue to receive recognition. The problem is that there is always another rung, and eventually, people like this forget why they started climbing the ladder and never appear to ever want to…
