The concept of family can be very problematic.

The idea that one is tied to a set of individuals for the entirety of their life, regardless of how a person makes you feel or treats you, is an overly externally serving, toxic relationship.

The idea of family above all else, even above yourself, is a problematic concept that needs to be explored, dissected and outright challenged.

Firstly, it is a lie.

I have many friends who I would consider more essential, necessary and beneficial to my life than certain family members. Your friends are usually the ones who support (and sometimes save you) when a family member causes you harm (intentionally or unintentionally).

Holding onto toxic family members simply because they are family members is a solution that should not be taken lightly. The concept of dropping everything for the service of the family could negatively impact your romantic relationship, career success and personal growth. Family does not…
